Welcome!

Tortugas Fundación Yepéz is an organization dedicated to protecting Sea Turtles as well as other
community conservation projects through sustainable methods. We also organize events and other eco-friendly projects such as beach cleaning campaigns, recycling programs, environmental education etc. Our main goal is to help protect sea turtles in our area by patrolling the beach which is a vital nesting habitat. Every day and night we patrol the 43 km long beach (by foot or by quadbike when we have one) to help protect the female turtles that come to lay her eggs on our beach. We also monitor all the nests as some require moving to a safe location, our incubator. In this way we can help protect this endangered species.

The founders of this project started to protect and save Sea Turtles in 1967 on this beach area. The fisherman Marcelino Yepéz and his wife Librada Géron Dominguez, took on the great responsibility to protect these beautiful helpless creatures and with their entire family worked hard without compensation to rescue our endangered sea turtles. Thanks to them and their hard work, we still have the opportunity to continue this critically important battle, to help save the turtles. We have worked here for almost 44 years and have experienced many sad moments, successful moments and unique moments.

The director of the foundation, Ricardo Yepéz, has been working with marine turtles all of his life, side by side with his parents.  He decided to follow his father’s footsteps, and together with his mother, sister and brother, dedicate his life to saving this species without compensation. Everyone who has once visited our beach, knows the Yepéz family, who welcome each guest with the same care and desire to share their knowledge about the work that they do. The reason for the foundation is  to enable us to continue the work that we do and to help us find support and funds to keep on working.  Many thanks to everyone who has followed us and has continued to support our projects for all these years.

There is perhaps no creature more global than the sea turtle, with a shared responsibility of people all over the world. Traveling across all the great oceans, they  lay their eggs on beaches around the world. The small baby turtles emerge from the sand on these shores, and if they are lucky enough to reach adulthood, they embark on journeys that mark thousands of miles and many international waters. We invite you to come visit us to learn about the work we do, about the turtles and to help us protect our environment.

We also organize other community activities such as cleaning the beach, collecting both plastic and other waste out of our beach and the sea, but also to help educate those around us about the dangers of waste in our ecosystem .
